Next Tuesday, Sept. 24, our Vernon ISD Social Worker Nicole Cameron will be hosting a parent informational meeting on "Vaping Prevention." The presentation will help prepare parents to reach their children and teach them to make healthy decisions regarding vaping. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., at the Vernon Elementary Cafeteria. It is open to ALL VISD parents, but those with children in the 5th thru 11th grades are highly encouraged to attend, as this is the age group vaping companies target the most.
The VMS Lion's Roar 1K/5K Color Run/Walk was held Tuesday evening. The funds raised from the event go to the VMS Student Incentive Fund. Follow the link to see some of the fun.

Check in and registration starts at 5 p.m. The 1K begins at 6 p.m., with the 5K to follow. Entry fee is $10 for students and $20 for adults. It's something no one wants to talk about -- yet, unfortunately we know it happens and that is teen suicide. September is Suicide Prevention Month with a focus on spreading information everyone needs to know on how to recognize when someone may be contemplating suicide and how to help. A student in Mrs. Kimberly Adams' science class shows her excitement when her lab experiment is a success. The experiment involved a beaker filled with vinegar and a balloon filled with baking soda. When the student lifted the balloon and poured the baking soda into the vinegar, the chemical reaction caused the balloon to blow up

Our 7th & 8th grade VMS Lions will take the field for their first game of the season Thursday when they host City View. VMS is holding a pep rally at 3:25 p.m. to pump up the teams and show that Lion Pride!! Dress up in your rodeo gear and support all of these future varsity Lions!!

Our VMS Fall Festival is set for Tuesday, Oct. 8. An information meeting for parents, grandparents and other community residents who would like to help with the event will be held at 6 p.m., next Monday, Sept. 16, in the VMS Cafeteria. The Fall Festival is a great, fun event that raises money for our student incentive fund. Our hope is for all of our students to have someone there at the meeting.

Our Lions are ready to go on a Leopard hunt!! Tonight's Homecoming activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with performances by our Roarin' Lion Band and VHS Drill Team. Vernon and Gainesville will kick it off at 7 p.m., and our Homecoming Queen will be crowned during a halftime ceremony. Remember -- tickets for all home VISD athletic events must be purchased online. We were just informed that Sand Road is closed from Franklin Dr. to Bismarck St. as the City of Vernon works on a water leak. It is expected to be closed for the rest of the day. If you are picking up students at McCord, Vernon Elementary or VHS you may need to change your route.
