7th grade girls district track

The Vernon Middle School girls’ track teams performed well at the District 7-3A Jr. High Track & Field Meet that was held Monday in Iowa Park. The 8th grade team placed in the top six in 14 events, while the 7th grade squad had top-six finishes in nine events.

In the 8th Grade Division, Vernon collected four silver medals and one bronze medal. Kensleigh Hamm claimed two of those silver medals, finishing second in both the 1600-meter Run and the 2400-meter Run. The other individual second-place finish came from Jahneela Torres in the 300-meter Hurdles. The 800-meter Relay team of Kenli Kajs, Payzlee Brannon, Jaelynn Valderrama and Mayzie Kemp also finished second.

The lone bronze medalist for the 8th team was Yareli Espinoza in the 2400-meter Run.

Both the Sprint Relay and Mile Relay finished fourth. Members of those relay teams were Valderrama, Maribel Lagunas, Yaryxel Fernandez and Kajs on the Sprint Relay, and Brannon, Espinoza, Kemp and Kajs on the Mile Relay.

Other’s who finished fourth included Brannon in the 100-meter Hurdles, Alina Guerrero in the 2400-meter Run, and Bryn Gardner in the 300-meter Hurdles.

Sixth finishers included Kemp in the 200-meter Dash, Brannon in the Triple Jump, and Lagunas in the 100-meter Hurdles and 300-meter Hurdles.

In the 7th Grade Division of the district meet Vernon had one second-place finish and that was in the Mile Relay. Running the relay were Chloe Feltman, Aaliyah Hampton, Braelyn Derwin, and Jaylynn Lira. The lone third-place finish also came in a relay, the Sprint Relay. Members of that team were Azaria Copeland, Derwin, Lira, and Hampton.

Trinity Villareal was the only member of the Vernon team grab a fourth-place finish and that was in the 800-meter Run. She also finished fifth in the 1600-meter Run. Others who finished fifth for Vernon included Talia Lopez in the 2400-meter Run, Derwin in the 100-meter Hurdles, and the 800-meter Relay team of Copeland, Feltman, Kendree Isenhower, and Lira.

Hampton was also sixth in the 100-meter Dash, while Lily Hamby was sixth in the Shot Put.
