It was a great day for our Vernon Middle School boys’ track teams last week, as they captured the District 7-3A Track & Field 8th Grade Championship, and took second place in the 7th Grade Division. The District Junior High Track Meet was held last Monday, March 25, in Jacksboro.
Along with winning the district team crown, the 8th grade team claimed three individual event gold medals and won all three relays.
Daniel Freeman won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.85 seconds, while Tyce Payne’s throw of 130-feet, 3-inches won the discus, and Tevan Evans cleared 5-10 to win the high jump.
Running on the district champion sprint relay were Joseph Eneanya, Tevan Evans, Ryan Fieldhouse and Payne, who turned in a time of 48.76 seconds. Eneanya, Fieldhouse and Payne were joined by Daniel Freeman on the district-winning 800-meter relay team who had a time of 1-minute, 44.10 seconds.
Members of the first-place mile relay team that turned in a time of 4:04.11 were Zander Leija, Thomas Gonzales, Fieldhouse and Payne.
Leija was also second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.66 seconds, while Payne was second in the long jump with a leap of 16-11, and Mu Soe was second in the shot put with a throw of 38-2.5.
Finishing third in their events were: Gonzales in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:02.03; King Freeman in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:58.79; Carlito Rodriguez in the 2400-meter run with a time of 9:24.37; Daniel Freeman in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.27 seconds, and Ryan Fieldhouse in the triple jump with a distance of 32-11.5.
In the 7th Grade Division, Vernon had three individual event champions, and four second place and two third place finishes. The 800-meter relay team also finished second.
Claiming gold medals in their individual events were Gabriel Cordoba in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.40 seconds, Aiden Trejo in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.02; and Caylor Streit who cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.
Streit was also second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.91 seconds and second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.07 seconds. Also finishing second were Xaven Leija who was second in the triple jump with a leap of 33-5, and Jahari Scales in the high jump after clearing 5-0.
Running on the 800-meter relay team that finished second were Xaven Leija, Jason Hill, Jadarious Scales and Jahari Scales who had a time of 1:51.71.
Gabriel Cordoba was third in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:07.54, and Jahari Scales was third in the long jump with a leap of 15-4.
